A transatlantic jet was compelled to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport.

American Airlines flight AA-62 was heading from Miami in the US to Paris. This happened when the crew members had declared an emergency and requested permission to divert to the mid-west airport.

The crew of the Boeing 777-200 jet told air traffic controllers that they had received a warning in the cockpit of a probable fire inside the cargo hold of the airplane.

The flight thereafter landed perfectly safely around 7.10 a.m. and the passengers exited through the terminal building and were escorted inside.

Then the fire crews from Shannon town and several ambulances attended the scene to offer assistance to the rescue and fire service teams of the airport. Some of the flights were placed in holding patterns for a short duration to permit the emergency aircraft priority landing.

An inspection of the cargo hold had been conducted already.

But then it is yet to be known if there was a fire or if it was a false alarm.

A spokesperson for Shannon Airport confirmed that passengers had been transferred to the airport terminal building that had been waiting for further instructions from the airline.
